Morning Glory

Rituals Series

Morning Glory

  • I grew up watching my mother and women in my neighborhood making a mandala by hand on the threshold of households with rice flour every morning. It was the first ritual they performed before sunrise every day. It is a sign to welcome people into the home, a tribute to harmonious co-existence, and thought to bring prosperity. Every morning, a mandala was made and destroyed by the end of the day.

My first-morning ritual is to brew my coffee, unload the dishwasher, which helps me initiate my thought process for the day, and write a page of gratitude.
