Nurturing is cultivating and fostering relationships and connections within ourselves. When we take steps to care for ourselves, we gain the strength to care for others.
Women have the gift of being natural nurturers who can multitask by juggling the roles they identify in family, career, and community. However, deep down in their conscience, they long for tranquility and moments of peace but often turn it down.
Women often downplay to prioritize self-care or well-being because they feel obligated to provide care and support to others and shy away from setting boundaries.
In many instances, they find it difficult to say it's okay to take a break, it's okay to ask for help, or it's okay to indulge in self-care because they feel guilty.
As a woman, a mother, a wife, an artist, and various roles that I identify myself in my family and community, I honor my self-care time through art making.
I make art to find my inner peace, and I hope others will experience it through my art.
Find Your Sparkle
The “go to” sparkle mantra I recently adopted when procrastinating on things that need attention is Nike's tagline “Just Do It.” I find these three simple words so powerful when I breathe into them. I close my eyes briefly, picture it on a blackboard, and feel it. It gives me the inertia that I need to get the job done, no matter how boring and time-consuming it can be.
This summer was one of the busiest times that overlapped with family engagements and my art practice and events. My tray labeled “need attention” (Not Urgent But Important) overflowed with checklists and paperwork. I came to a point where I had to clear up the space of overwhelm in my head and be free! So, I turned to Nike's slogan, “Just Do It.” I put my a** down and never stood up until I got to each one. It felt absolutely amazing!!!
